Brrr!

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Dave and the Frost Fan Fraternity were up last night, trying to protect their fruit from freezing.  It got down to 27 degrees F on our farm.  Tonight the forecast calls for even colder temperatures, so it will be another short night for Dave.  It’s a good time to remember that God is in control.

Fresh, clean asparagus!

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

We rinse the fresh asparagus we get from our neighboring family farmer, and chill it to keep it fresh.  It’s just one of the little extras we do, to keep quality as farm-fresh as possible!  And our customers appreciate it, as shown in this typical exchange:

Customer question:  “How many pounds of asparagus in a tray?”             Answer:  “Between five and six pounds.”                                                    Usual customer response:  “We’ll take this tray.”

Honeybees went home.

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Jim Hilton took his honeybees home Wednesday night, since their work on our farm is done.  Apples are the latest crop in bloom, and their peak is over.

The blossoms producing the best apples are the king blooms; they open a bit earlier than the three or four blooms that surround them.  The best scenario is to have great weather for pollination as soon as the king blooms open, and for the crabapples to bloom that early, as well.  Then, as the bees do their work, the best fruit will start to grow.

Flower baskets are here!

Friday, May 7th, 2010

We have some lovely flowers, ready to hang on a porch or deck.  Different varieties for sun or shade; all do well in windy conditions.  (Our market is basically in a wind tunnel from Lake Michigan.  We only carry flowers that can hold up to it!)  Stop in to see the begonias, nonstop petunias, ivy geraniums, red calliope geraniums, and hummingbird-friendly fuchsias.  We have herb pots, too, with edible herbs to snip for your favorite recipes.

All are grown by Villadsen’s, a local greenhouse.  Villadsen’s also grow plants from the special seeds Dave orders, for our peppers, tomatoes, and melons.  Dave plants them in our fields as soon as the weather is warm enough.

Photos on website home page

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The photos you see on the home page were taken on our farm May 3.  The pretty white blossoms show apples in full bloom.  The orchard in bloom will be producing SweeTango(R) apples by September.  The pink blossoms are crabapple pollinators.  The leafy green picture has sweet cherries developing–you can see the pea-sized cherries that don’t yet weigh down the stems.   I enjoyed my farm walk—hope you do, too!
