What perfect weather for the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival last Saturday, September 10! I cored & sliced six varieties of apples all day long, for festival attendees to sample. We had our own SweeTango(R), Honeycrisp, Zestar!, Elstar, Gingergold, and Chestnut apples for sale and for sampling. By day’s end, I had about eight gallons of apple cores–that’s a lot of slicing! It was a fun day. We saw many friends there, and met many new people.

Dave and I took a tour around our farm last evening, and sampled the upcoming apple varieties to check on ripeness. Just a week ago, the Honeycrisp were green, green, green, and looked at least two weeks away from being ready. However, very cold nights and nice sunny days have advanced their finishing, and they now look and taste very good! We are waiting until this afternoon to spot-pick some Honeycrisp to have at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-off Festival on Saturday from 10 to 5. We will also be picking Elstar and specialty Chestnut apples to take to the festival. Harvest time is busy, so don’t count on those varieties to be at the market until Monday. At the market right now, from our own orchards: SweeTango(R), Zestar!, Paula Red, Earligold, and Gingergold apples, freestone peaches and nectarines, summer and fall plums, tomatoes, and more, with a shelf full of free samples of our fresh produce so you know what you are getting! Look for Gala around next Thursday.

This is the last week for our amazing sweet corn, picked fresh daily. Our customers tell us, “It’s the best!” You can pick it up self-serve after hours if you are running late.
Be sure to come to the market when we’re open (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, including Labor Day) for those wonderful SweeTango(R) apples! Check out the sampling shelf (to the left as you enter the front doors) for free samples of several apple, plum, and tomato varieties. There’s no excuse for not getting your servings of fruits & vegetables when you come to Rennhack Orchards Market!

The wait is over! SweeTango(R) apples are ready for you to enjoy! Stop by the market to pick some up, for that great “crunch” and harmonious sweet-tart flavor combination! It’s time to let your taste buds dance with SweeTango(R)!
In case you haven’t been in Oceana County for the past few years, this great new apple is a cross between Honeycrisp (mom) and Zestar! (dad), developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota. Dave got in at the beginning of the commercial venture, and planted thousands of trees, so we have been able to sample them out for area residents and visitors for a few years now. This year, the trees are bigger and there are more apples, so they will be more available to more people across the nation. One special thing about SweeTango(R) is that it is a managed apple variety, and the apples don’t even get to be called “SweeTango” unless they meet stringent quality standards. This means that every time you eat a SweeTango(R), you get a great eating experience! Get yours at Rennhack Orchards Market, your local source for SweeTango(R) apples!

The photos on our home page show some of the August bounty of our farm in Oceana County! There is a photo of our colorful bell peppers at the market, then a peach tree which has been summer pruned to let the sun shine in to make the peaches nice and sweet! Next, we are waiting for these apples to finish ripening so we can enjoy SweeTango(R) apples again–mm-mmm! The funny-looking red veggies are ladyfinger tomatoes. They are fun for kids to eat, and are easier to slice up than grape tomatoes for salads. The last photo is of our amazing sweet corn. We should have sweet corn through Labor Day, so enjoy those meals with corn on the cob! It’s tender and easy to eat, no matter how many teeth you have!
