Make your life easier with our gifts

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Take the hassle out of the holidays–get our gift baskets for those hard-to-give-to people!  They will love getting the gift baskets filled with tasty treats, and you can do it with a phone call (for shippable gifts) or a stop in to the market early in the season, so it is taken care of!  From under $15 to over $50, our bags and baskets are good quality and good value, and they show that you care enough to shop locally!

Our gift basket guru, Margie, has put together wonderful baskets that have no-sugar-added items for those on special diets.  Another  popular option is the breakfast basket, with gourmet pancake mix, pure maple syrup, and more.   Delight Mexican-food fans with a basket containing locally famous La Fiesta chips, local asparagus guacamole, and zesty salsa.   The snack attack basket, filled with munchy treats, makes a nice gift for teachers, coaches, and office assistants.  Need a gift for the boss or co-worker?  We can take care of that, too!  And if you are a business owner with special customers, save yourself time by giving us your list; we provide handmade gift tags with each gift, to add a personal touch!   If you want to send fresh fruit from Michigan, we offer our apple shipper, which nestles each apple in foam for a safe trip to the recipient!

Just remember, early is better!  You’ll enjoy the season more, if you take care of your gifts beforehand!  We’re open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday through December 30 (closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day only).

Apples in Abundance

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

If you are looking for a great apple, look no further!  Dave grows an amazing number of apple varieties for the market.  My favorite?  SweeTango(R) is so flavorful, crisp, and juicy that it is hard to beat!  It’s not only a great fresh apple, but also adds a special note to salads and makes wonderful apple crisp and pie.  If you haven’t tried SweeTango(R) apples yet, you owe it to your taste buds to give them a try!  We hope to have them for another month or so (depending upon demand).

Just visit Rennhack Orchards Market from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday (we’re open through Dec. 30) and you can try an apple that is new to you!  Just inside the front doors (to your left) is a nice long shelf covered with apple varieties to sample.  From old favorites like Cortland, to newer varieties like Honeycrisp(TM) and SweeTango(R), from A (Ambrosia) to Z (Zestar!), there is sure to be a variety that suits you!   And remember those out-of-town friends and relatives who would love to receive a taste of Oceana County from you–we ship apples as well as gift baskets!  Happy munching!

Like Red Delicious? Try Blondee!

Monday, September 26th, 2011

If you are a fan of Red Delicious (it’s hard for me to believe, but there are actually some people who claim that they like them), try a Blondee–this early golden-skinned apple has the kind of sweet flavor that a Red Delicious apple should have.  Other apples to try, if Red Delicious is something you like, are Gala (very sweet and in season now), SweeTango(R) apples (lots of sugars, but also plenty of acids, for a great flavor combination), and Honeycrisp(TM) (just about the opposite of the texture of Red Delicious, with a very thin skin and  a wonderfully crisp and juicy texture).  Coming soon (by Thursday), Cortland is another great variety, with pure white flesh and good flavor.  With so many wonderful apple varieties that can be used for fresh eating AND cooking, it is hard for me to recommend Red Delicious (which is not recommended for any kind of cooking).  Expand your horizons:  try a different apple this season!  (And if you are one of the fans of Red Delicious, I’m sorry.  Views expressed in this blog belong to my taste buds!)

Photos on Home Page

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

The photos on our home page show some of the August bounty of our farm in Oceana County!  There is a photo of our colorful bell peppers at the market, then a peach tree which has been summer pruned to let the sun shine in to make the peaches nice and sweet!  Next, we are waiting for these apples to finish ripening so we can enjoy SweeTango(R) apples again–mm-mmm!  The funny-looking red veggies are ladyfinger tomatoes.  They are fun for kids to eat, and are easier  to slice up than grape tomatoes for salads.  The last photo is of our amazing sweet corn.  We should have sweet corn through Labor Day, so enjoy those meals with corn on the cob!  It’s tender and easy to eat, no matter how many teeth you have!  :-)

“No Socks” Salad (So good, & so good for you, it’ll knock your socks off!)

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Put 2 c. cooked, chilled, diced chicken in large bowl.  Sprinkle on 1/2 tsp. lemon pepper & stir well.  Add 2 c. cooked & chilled whole wheat pasta and 3 c. cooked tender-crisp, chilled & diced Oceana County asparagus.  Sprinkle on 1/4 tsp. salt & stir gently to mix.  Add one Honeycrisp apple (diced with skin on ), 8 oz. Country Dairy Mild Cheddar Cheese cut into small cubes, and 1/4 c. oven-roasted sliced & salted almonds; stir gently to mix.  Pour on 1/2 c. (or more, if you like it zippier) Vidalia(R) Onion Honey Mustard Salad Dressing (available at Rennhack Orchards Market) & mix well.  Keep chilled until serving time.  Makes 8 main-dish servings.

I served up this original recipe at the National Asparagus Festival Food Show in Hart on June 11.  It was fun to see so many people there!
