An apple a day. . .

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

We have harvested the apples on our farm in Hart, and are keeping many varieties in our cooler to sell at the market until Christmas!  We can’t predict exactly when a certain variety will sell out, but you can ask at the market for a general idea, so you can stock up.  We have a good supply of SweeTango(R) for the next few weeks.  They are amazing to eat fresh, add crunch & flavor to green salads or chicken pasta salad, and they make delicious pies, holding a nice slice.  If you haven’t tried this apple yet, what are you waiting for?  Stop in the market for a free sample!  Our fresh fruit sample shelf is just inside the front doors, to the left.

(Volunteers fixing up the Andre Bosse Center in Hart are enjoying SweeTango(R) apples today!  Thanks for helping!)

Apple Harvest is History

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Our 2010 apple harvest is over.  All of our varieties of apples have been picked now, and the latest-maturing apples are at the market.  Fuji is the last variety to ripen on our farm; it is a very hard (dense) apple with a sweet flavor, and it is a great “keeper” (stores well for a long time).  Of course, when keeping apples for more than a day or two, they will hold up best under refrigeration.  Keep them in the hydrator drawer in your refrigerator (but never in the same drawer as carrots) or in another cold storage location.  They look pretty in that bowl on your countertop, but they won’t stay fresh very long there.  We still have a number of varieties of our own apples at our market in Hart, including SweeTango(R), so enjoy them during this bountiful season!

2010 Parents vs. Child Apple Taste-Off Results

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The people have spoken, and once again, SweeTango(R) apples are the clear winner!  We offered samples of our Honeycrisp (mom), Zestar! (dad), and SweeTango(R) (child) to festivalgoers at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival on Saturday.  After sampling all three varieties, tasters voted for their favorite.  Of the 472 votes placed this year, 237 were for SweeTango(R) apples.  Honeycrisp came in a distant second, with 132 votes, and Zestar! followed with 103 votes.  Thanks to all of the people who participated in this tasty contest!  Of course, our apples are available at our market until they are sold out, and we offer free samples there, too.

Enjoy the fruits of summer while you can!

Peach season is moving right along.  We currently have our tree-ripened white-fleshed and yellow-fleshed freestone peaches at the market.  The white-fleshed variety has a tropical flavor; it’s both lovely and tasty when combined with blueberries and/or traditional yellow-fleshed peaches.  We still have plenty of our own vine-ripened cantaloupe and watermelons, and we currently have local blueberries, but the season will end soon.  Our vine-ripened tomatoes are now tasty and looking good!   We now have some late-summer apples from our orchards; Zestar! (the father of SweeTango(R)) and Gingergold are now ripe.  Look for our SweeTango(R) apples by September 1!

New photos on homepage

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

You know it’s getting toward the end of summer when local melons are ripe!  The photos of our farm in Oceana County on our homepage include some of our melons (we have both orange-fleshed and green-fleshed melons, sweet and juicy), one of our watermelons (we grow several varieties), a close-up of apples showing the typical freckling of SweeTango(R) apples that are turning red (we hope these will make the grade to earn the name!), one of our young orchards which will produce some SweeTango(R) apples around the first of September (the apples will be nice and red by then!), and two photos of peaches ripening.  You may notice the stubs of branches near a couple of the peaches.  Summer pruning is done on peaches; branches without fruit (often growing straight up) are removed to prevent them from shading the fruit.  Peaches need to see plenty of sunshine to develop their beautiful color and juicy sweet flavor.
