Dave & I just enjoyed the new variety of sweet corn that we started picking today. Wowee! It’s a keeper! This is a mid-season variety that is extra tender and sweet. (Dave says, “It’s so sweet you’ll want to have it for dessert!”)
We cooked some extra, so I could cut it off the cob and freeze it. Eight ears of this corn produced seven cups of corn to put in freezer bags for the long cold winter! This is the corn that we’ll have fresh at the market all of this week and well into next week (Dave put in three plantings of it this spring). If you want to freeze a bunch, buy ten dozen ears for a 50-cent discount per dozen.

We’ll have three main-season varieties of sweet and juicy peaches at our market in Hart this week. The guys will start picking them today, and this hot weather will keep them ripening quickly! These are freestone peaches, although we’ve heard that Red Haven are very sticky to the pit this year. We’ll be slicing them so we’ll be able to recommend the easiest one for you to can or freeze. Thanks for enjoying our fruits and vegetables that are fresh from our orchards and fields!

You say “toe-may-toe”, and I say “toe-mah-toe”–but we all say “Hooray!” because tomato season has arrived here in Oceana County! Our vine-ripened tomatoes are now available at our market. Just a tip–the very ripest ones get snagged right away, so pick up some today for this weekend’s BLTs, and let them get that much riper on your counter at home. Oh, boy, we’ve been waiting for this farm fresh flavor!

The plentiful rain and abundant sunshine we’ve had this spring and summer have made this year’s sweet corn absolutely delicious! Even our earliest variety is very sweet and tasty, and tender, of course! Here in Oceana County (and Hart, specifically) we have received rainfall when other parts of West Michigan have not. If you take a drive north, you can see the telltale signs of insufficient rainfall–cornstalks that are yellow and brown, and leaves on the cornstalks that stick spikily up instead of flopping over. Be sure to enjoy the best crops of summer–and that includes corn on the cob! We start picking our sweet corn early every morning, so you get that fresh flavor!

Saturday, July 17, will be a special day at the market for two reasons: First, our very first book signing will start at 1 p.m. with local author Mary Beth Crain and her Knack! Vegetable Cookbook. The cookbook is a dandy one for beginners and experienced cooks alike; gourmet recipes will entice the experts, while plenty of photos show food prep techniques (as well as the finished dishes) for the novice. Come out for this special event with this special lady who has embraced living here in Oceana County, even though she used to love living in the big city.
Second, our first day of our famous sweet corn will be this Saturday! The guys start picking early in the morning, and continue picking throughout the day, so you get just-picked corn at the peak of freshness! Oh, yeah, we’ve all been waiting for this!
