Our own Apricots, Today until they’re gone!

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

A few apricots escaped the frosts (& escaped detection early in their development–big green apricot leaves do a good job at concealing little green apricots), & are at the market today. We also have the earliest of our sweet, juicy peaches, our own bell peppers (first picking), zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, summer plums (Methley, Early Magic, Early Golden), tart cherries, & Honeycrisp while they last, and local blueberries. We hope to start harvesting our fresh sweet corn on Saturday.

You can see the sweet corn growing in the photo on our homepage; Dave plants as soon as he can, to get the earliest corn! You can’t see the melon and tomato plants, as they are under cover to protect from frost. Notice the frost fan in the apple orchard (our frost fans helped a lot this spring). Our own Honeycrisp (and Mutsu, Jonagold, and Ida Red) came out of Controlled Atmosphere storage in excellent condition. Our gift basket corner features local and Michigan-made products, beautifully put together by Margie (our Gift Basket Guru). We have clean, fresh Oceana County asparagus, chilled & ready!

Apples in Abundance

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

If you are looking for a great apple, look no further!  Dave grows an amazing number of apple varieties for the market.  My favorite?  SweeTango(R) is so flavorful, crisp, and juicy that it is hard to beat!  It’s not only a great fresh apple, but also adds a special note to salads and makes wonderful apple crisp and pie.  If you haven’t tried SweeTango(R) apples yet, you owe it to your taste buds to give them a try!  We hope to have them for another month or so (depending upon demand).

Just visit Rennhack Orchards Market from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday (we’re open through Dec. 30) and you can try an apple that is new to you!  Just inside the front doors (to your left) is a nice long shelf covered with apple varieties to sample.  From old favorites like Cortland, to newer varieties like Honeycrisp(TM) and SweeTango(R), from A (Ambrosia) to Z (Zestar!), there is sure to be a variety that suits you!   And remember those out-of-town friends and relatives who would love to receive a taste of Oceana County from you–we ship apples as well as gift baskets!  Happy munching!

Beautiful day last Saturday!

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

What perfect weather for the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival last Saturday, September 10!  I cored & sliced six varieties of apples all day long, for festival attendees to sample.  We had our own SweeTango(R), Honeycrisp, Zestar!, Elstar, Gingergold, and Chestnut apples for sale and for sampling.  By day’s end, I had about eight gallons of apple cores–that’s a lot of slicing!  It was a fun day.  We saw many friends there, and met many new people.

“No Socks” Salad (So good, & so good for you, it’ll knock your socks off!)

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Put 2 c. cooked, chilled, diced chicken in large bowl.  Sprinkle on 1/2 tsp. lemon pepper & stir well.  Add 2 c. cooked & chilled whole wheat pasta and 3 c. cooked tender-crisp, chilled & diced Oceana County asparagus.  Sprinkle on 1/4 tsp. salt & stir gently to mix.  Add one Honeycrisp apple (diced with skin on ), 8 oz. Country Dairy Mild Cheddar Cheese cut into small cubes, and 1/4 c. oven-roasted sliced & salted almonds; stir gently to mix.  Pour on 1/2 c. (or more, if you like it zippier) Vidalia(R) Onion Honey Mustard Salad Dressing (available at Rennhack Orchards Market) & mix well.  Keep chilled until serving time.  Makes 8 main-dish servings.

I served up this original recipe at the National Asparagus Festival Food Show in Hart on June 11.  It was fun to see so many people there!
