Apples in Abundance

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

If you are looking for a great apple, look no further!  Dave grows an amazing number of apple varieties for the market.  My favorite?  SweeTango(R) is so flavorful, crisp, and juicy that it is hard to beat!  It’s not only a great fresh apple, but also adds a special note to salads and makes wonderful apple crisp and pie.  If you haven’t tried SweeTango(R) apples yet, you owe it to your taste buds to give them a try!  We hope to have them for another month or so (depending upon demand).

Just visit Rennhack Orchards Market from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday (we’re open through Dec. 30) and you can try an apple that is new to you!  Just inside the front doors (to your left) is a nice long shelf covered with apple varieties to sample.  From old favorites like Cortland, to newer varieties like Honeycrisp(TM) and SweeTango(R), from A (Ambrosia) to Z (Zestar!), there is sure to be a variety that suits you!   And remember those out-of-town friends and relatives who would love to receive a taste of Oceana County from you–we ship apples as well as gift baskets!  Happy munching!

Beautiful day last Saturday!

What perfect weather for the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival last Saturday, September 10!  I cored & sliced six varieties of apples all day long, for festival attendees to sample.  We had our own SweeTango(R), Honeycrisp, Zestar!, Elstar, Gingergold, and Chestnut apples for sale and for sampling.  By day’s end, I had about eight gallons of apple cores–that’s a lot of slicing!  It was a fun day.  We saw many friends there, and met many new people.

“No Socks” Salad (So good, & so good for you, it’ll knock your socks off!)

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Put 2 c. cooked, chilled, diced chicken in large bowl.  Sprinkle on 1/2 tsp. lemon pepper & stir well.  Add 2 c. cooked & chilled whole wheat pasta and 3 c. cooked tender-crisp, chilled & diced Oceana County asparagus.  Sprinkle on 1/4 tsp. salt & stir gently to mix.  Add one Honeycrisp apple (diced with skin on ), 8 oz. Country Dairy Mild Cheddar Cheese cut into small cubes, and 1/4 c. oven-roasted sliced & salted almonds; stir gently to mix.  Pour on 1/2 c. (or more, if you like it zippier) Vidalia(R) Onion Honey Mustard Salad Dressing (available at Rennhack Orchards Market) & mix well.  Keep chilled until serving time.  Makes 8 main-dish servings.

I served up this original recipe at the National Asparagus Festival Food Show in Hart on June 11.  It was fun to see so many people there!

Honeycrisp are so good!

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Thanks to some excellent Controlled Atmosphere storage over the winter, our Honeycrisp apples are still crunchy and delicious!  We also have some of our Jonagold and Mutsu apples for your enjoyment.  They are good fresh, or in recipes.  Stop by the  National Asparagus Festival Food Show at the KOC Hall in Hart this Saturday, June 11, from 11 a.m. to 1:30, and sample the dishes–including one developed by yours truly (Joann Rennhack).  I’ll be serving up a tasty salad that includes chicken, whole wheat pasta, Oceana County asparagus, Country Dairy Mild Cheddar Cheese, and the “secret” ingredient that really makes it exceptional:  Our own Honeycrisp apples!

2010 Parents vs. Child Apple Taste-Off Results

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The people have spoken, and once again, SweeTango(R) apples are the clear winner!  We offered samples of our Honeycrisp (mom), Zestar! (dad), and SweeTango(R) (child) to festivalgoers at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival on Saturday.  After sampling all three varieties, tasters voted for their favorite.  Of the 472 votes placed this year, 237 were for SweeTango(R) apples.  Honeycrisp came in a distant second, with 132 votes, and Zestar! followed with 103 votes.  Thanks to all of the people who participated in this tasty contest!  Of course, our apples are available at our market until they are sold out, and we offer free samples there, too.
