Apple Harvest is History

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Our 2010 apple harvest is over.  All of our varieties of apples have been picked now, and the latest-maturing apples are at the market.  Fuji is the last variety to ripen on our farm; it is a very hard (dense) apple with a sweet flavor, and it is a great “keeper” (stores well for a long time).  Of course, when keeping apples for more than a day or two, they will hold up best under refrigeration.  Keep them in the hydrator drawer in your refrigerator (but never in the same drawer as carrots) or in another cold storage location.  They look pretty in that bowl on your countertop, but they won’t stay fresh very long there.  We still have a number of varieties of our own apples at our market in Hart, including SweeTango(R), so enjoy them during this bountiful season!

2010 Parents vs. Child Apple Taste-Off Results

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The people have spoken, and once again, SweeTango(R) apples are the clear winner!  We offered samples of our Honeycrisp (mom), Zestar! (dad), and SweeTango(R) (child) to festivalgoers at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival on Saturday.  After sampling all three varieties, tasters voted for their favorite.  Of the 472 votes placed this year, 237 were for SweeTango(R) apples.  Honeycrisp came in a distant second, with 132 votes, and Zestar! followed with 103 votes.  Thanks to all of the people who participated in this tasty contest!  Of course, our apples are available at our market until they are sold out, and we offer free samples there, too.

Is SweeTango(R) Better Than Honeycrisp?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Honeycrisp apples have been the gold standard of apples, and with the new SweeTango(R) apple comes the question, “Is it better than Honeycrisp?”  Each person gets to decide for himself/herself, but we are holding the Parents vs. Child Taste-Off  at our booth in Silver Lake September 11, in a good-natured attempt to quantify the answer.  Join us at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, sample Honeycrisp (mom), Zestar! (dad), and SweeTango(R) (child), and vote for your favorite!  We will post the results at our market in Hart, and at www.rennhackmarket.com.  All three varieties will be fully ripe and tasty this year, so it will be a fair (and fun) contest!  (For more information about the festival, visit www.thinkdunes.com.)

SweeTango(R) Harvest Starts!

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Yippee!  The harvest of SweeTango(R) apples begins todayon our farm in Hart!  These are the great new apples you’ve been waiting for!  We are pretty excited about them, as you might guess from our home page–three of the six rotating photos feature them!  One photo shows an orchard, one shows the top of a tree with apples on it, and one shows Dave enjoying a nice ripe SweeTango(R) apple!  Mmm-mmm!  The other photos show our fall plums, peaches, and sweet corn, all available & tasty!

Enjoy the fruits of summer while you can!

Peach season is moving right along.  We currently have our tree-ripened white-fleshed and yellow-fleshed freestone peaches at the market.  The white-fleshed variety has a tropical flavor; it’s both lovely and tasty when combined with blueberries and/or traditional yellow-fleshed peaches.  We still have plenty of our own vine-ripened cantaloupe and watermelons, and we currently have local blueberries, but the season will end soon.  Our vine-ripened tomatoes are now tasty and looking good!   We now have some late-summer apples from our orchards; Zestar! (the father of SweeTango(R)) and Gingergold are now ripe.  Look for our SweeTango(R) apples by September 1!
